Reflecting on a Year of Purpose and Progress: State of the Chamber Address 2023
On a crisp December day, the Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce gathered its members and friends at the historic Elms Hotel and Spa for the Annual Holiday Luncheon, a time-honored tradition that brings the community together to celebrate not just the festive season, but also to take a closer look at the state of the Chamber, its accomplishments, and its plans for the future. At the helm of this year‘s address was Chamber Director Brian Rice, who provided an insightful glimpse into the Chamber‘s journey over the past year and its aspirations moving forward.
A Return to the Chamber’s Core Mission
Brian Rice began his address with a clear vision: a return to the basics. In his inaugural year as Chamber President, he sought to realign the Chamber’s focus towards its core mission. He articulated this mission by reminding all present of the Chamber’s enduring purpose:
“To help businesses engage in the community, influencing purposeful change and impacting our future for a greater quality of life for all.”
Engaging in the Community
Rice highlighted the Chamber’s commitment to community engagement in 2023. The Chamber played an instrumental role in welcoming 11 new businesses into Excelsior Springs, connecting them with vital resources within the city. The monthly luncheons underwent a transformation with a renewed emphasis on networking, fostering a sense of camaraderie among members. Several After Hours events were reinstated, broadening networking opportunities for a wider audience. Notably, the Chamber participated in the first-ever multi-Chamber After Hours event, bringing local businesses together across Clay County.
The year also marked the successful establishment of the Westside Community Improvement District, uniting over 80 businesses with a shared vision. The Farmers Market, in its second season, enriched the community with contests and entertainment, promoting wellness around farm-fresh foods. Looking ahead to 2024, the Chamber aspires to elevate community engagement to new heights.
Transforming Excelsior’s Westside
Rice emphasized the Chamber’s leadership in steering purposeful change on Excelsior’s westside. The earnings from a one-cent CID sales tax will be directed towards improving infrastructure and design in this area. Plans include enhancing event promotion, marketing
efforts, and striving for a modern, accessible, and appealing shopping experience, catering not only to tourists but to all residents.
Collaborations with DEP, the City of Excelsior Springs, the Excelsior Springs School District, and Thrive Excelsior gained strength over the past year. These partnerships are committed to driving meaningful change that enhances the quality of life for everyone in the community.
Nurturing Leadership and Advocacy
Rice underscored the Chamber’s role in shaping the future by aligning with Thrive Excelsior and participating in the newly established Citizens Leadership Academy. This program aims to train and inspire future community leaders and business advocates. Succession planning is paramount, ensuring that the legacy of leadership continues for generations to come.
The Chamber endorsed and supported significant campaigns in 2023, including the construction of the new Lewis Elementary School and the approval of the Recreational Marijuana Tax, contributing to public awareness and safety.
Additionally, the Chamber actively partnered with the City of Excelsior Springs in securing matching funds for the $21.5 million RAISE grant. They also played a pivotal role in lobbying for grant support, facilitating improvements at the Hall of Waters, and offering crucial support to Excelsior Springs Hospital.
Rice’s closing remarks were a testament to the Chamber’s commitment to its members. He expressed his belief that the momentum gained would continue to grow as excitement spreads and these transformative changes take shape.
A Bright Future Ahead
Rice’s address exuded optimism and determination. He assured the Chamber membership that the changes ahead would undoubtedly influence their businesses, whether directly or indirectly. With a robust mission, a resilient community, and a steadfast Chamber, the path forward appears promising.
