The Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center held a special ribbon cutting and rededication ceremony Thursday, Nov. 17 showcasing their newly reconditioned rail car.

The rail car was donated to the center in August 2019 by Union Pacific in partnership with the Transportation Communications Union (TCU), the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the Advanced Training Services Department (TSD) at the Job Corps campus. Over the past three years, students have used the rail car in rare, real world hands-on training. Students from TSD, carpentry, masonry, welders, painters and home builders’ programs benefited from this opportunity.

Lori Sams, Job Corps Center DirectorDuring the ceremony Thursday, Lane Shelton, TSD Excelsior Springs Lead Field Educational Representative praised the partnership and commended the students on their work reconditioning the rail car. Special guests also speaking during the ceremony were Chris Kuhn, Education and Training Resources (ETR) Director of Center Operations, Susan Stanley Operations Director for MINACT, Job Corps Center Director Lori Sams and TCU/IAM representatives Joel Hernandez and Jason Dreis.

Chamber President Brian Rice congratulated the students on their accomplishment and shared the Chamber’s pride in its working relationship with the Job Corps Center. He reminded the students that the Excelsior community and its business leaders are here to support them as mentors and as possible employers along their future career path.
